The 2010 Global
Burden of Disease (GBD) Study shows “The #1 disease burden,
worldwide, with respect to economic and social impact, is low-back-pain”. Since 1986 the global spinal implant/device market grew from $65MM
to $7.5BB – a 100+ multiple. However, low back, spine patients, surgical
outcomes still average 30%-50% failure rate; meaning 1 or more follow-up surgeries,
or persistent pain symptoms. Ortho-Gnostics’ (The Project), will use the $100MM
grant to conduct a prospective, technology driven, global back pain/spine
clinical outcomes study, and develop a diagnostics outcomes database for clinic
and surgical use. Including 100,000 surgery and non-surgery/conservative care
patients (minimum 24-months follow-up) with the goal of developing consensus
for diagnosis, surgical, and other treatment methodologies, to significantly
improve patient outcomes.
The 2nd, critical and concurrent component of The
Project, includes a 200 city grassroots educational, physical rehab/conservative
care, ‘back-to-work’, ‘back-to-living’ SpineCareCenters for low-back-pain patients;
regardless of income/socioeconomic status.
